Roman General Maximus is betrayed by Commodus, the Emperor's son, who murders his father and orders Maximus's execution. Maximus escapes, becomes a gladiator, and rises through the ranks to eventually challenge Commodus in the Colosseum, seeking revenge for his murdered family and a return to Roman ideals.
