The Driver (Ryan Gosling) is a mysterious man who works as a stuntman, mechanic, and getaway driver for criminals. He's good at his jobs and takes them seriously, but he doesn't carry a gun. He's close to his neighbor Irene and her son Benicio, but their relationship is threatened when Irene's husband, Standard, is released from prison. Standard is assaulted by a gangster and must rob a pawn shop for $40,000 to pay off a debt. The Driver agrees to help, but the job goes wrong and Standard is killed. The Driver must then risk his life to protect Irene and Benicio.
